We love the Hotel Cafe. It’s a goodly place full of fine people and free flowing* flavoured vodka.

One thing we love more than going there is playing there. Friday June 12, 10pm. It will be the party of the month, if not the week.

If you think you might attend, come and share the love in advance here

We flew on wings of silver to SXSW. Except Brian and Monica who drove across the desert in a yellow car made of congas and guitars.

We went to parties and played a show and met Justin Townes Earle and watched Echo and his Bunnymen and drank champagne and danced all night and saw the bats and met a cat and got fat.

And then we flew home. Except Brian and Monica who drove.cimg3596.JPG img_0964.JPGimg_0952.JPGcimg3572.JPG

We had a great time at Home, Silver Lake last weekend. We debuted our new line-up, including Monica on vocals, Candace on trombone, and Brian on everything else.

Review of the Year

dt.jpgWell, 2008 was a busy old year for us. It was the year the seed of Dylan Trees, planted in the ground of the Los Angeles folk scene, and watered by the gentle hand of our compassionate fans, grew into the thrusting green shoot of a clumsy extended metaphor.

This is what happened, and who it happened to:

In May we played our FIRST EVER SHOW. At Ruby’s birthday party in Hermosa Beach we played in front of an invited audience of friends, family, well-wishers, and vagrants. It was a hot day, the smell of the ocean hung in the air, there were cupcakes and tequila. We were happy.

We also did our FIRST PHOTO SHOOT in Echo Park, under the watchful genius of filmmaker Michael Totten.

In other news, Jeremy went soul searching in South Carolina and got hospitalized with food poisoning, and we saw Dark Meat kill the Echo with their anarcho horn driven mayhem.

In June we played our FIRST EVER SHOW IN PUBLIC at the inimitable Genghis Cohen. Jeremy forgot the words, Jodi couldn’t hear herself, but we had a high old time. There’ll always be a place in our hearts for Genghis.

In other news, Jodi found the smallest functioning house in L.A. to move into, while Rob and Jeremy trekked to Spaceland to pay homage at the altar of the Fleet Foxes.

In July we ROCKED THE DERBY. Battling with a karaoke party in the next door room, we played to a small Monday night crowd. A bit of a jobbing show, but it was nice of people to make the effort to come out.

We also played a three song set to a bemused but charmed dinner crowd at Live at the Lounge in Hermosa Beach. Also on the bill was The Bowmans, who played an even more charming set. We heart the Bowmans.

At the end of July we HELPED LAUNCH A MAGAZINE. We were invited to play the launch party for excellent free music mag The Deli, at the Swinghouse Studios in West Hollywood. We had a lovely time, especially as the after show drinking got thoroughly out of hand.

In other news, we mixed the crap out of our E.P., and said goodbye to drummer Chelsey, who moved, as all good things do, to San Francisco. We miss you, Chelsey.

In August we SAID HELLO to our new drummer Heather. She is an amateur magician, a qualified acupuncturist, and a clairvoyant. How could we say no.

We didn’t play any shows, but we did see Bon Iver at the Troubadour, and sang along to The Wolves, so that sort of counts as performing in public.

September looked a lot like August. We sorted the artwork for the EP, got haircuts, and put the world to rights.

In October we RELEASED SOMETHING: the Charlie Horse E.P., on Mother West records. It’s on iTunes and Amazon – really – take a look. To celebrate, we played a launch party at the Hotel Cafe, we drank gin, and we ate Monte Cristos at the diner across the road. We are very pleased with the way the four tracks worked out, and kind people are saying lovely things about it.

We also heard that our dear friends John and Laura were kind enough to put Henry Collapsed in the soundtrack for their feature film Fling. We went to the L.A. premiere, wearing our finest threads.

In November we played our FIRST SHOW OUTSIDE LOS ANGELES at the Kansas City premiere of Fling. We played two nights running at the Czar Bar, the first night with The Republic Tigers, the second with Dri. It was brilliant.

Back in L.A we played at our favourite local dive bar: the Cinema Bar. We dealt with the tiny stage and logistical difficulties through the power of tequila and space/time alteration, assisted by Captain Danger.

We ended the year with a FILMED SESSION at the fabulous ChessVolt studio for the Luxury Wafer blog. Keep an eye on the blog to see how it turned out.

So that was the year that was. Thanks a million billion trillion and a half to all the people who supported us along the way.

We are going to hit 2009 running, falling over, crawling for a bit, then jogging slowly ignoring the shooting pains up our side, drinking gin from the hip flask we snuck into the athletics club in our sock. Cheers!
